CIECH Produces Salt for the Whole of Europe in Stassfurt

Stassfurt, July 13, 2021 - For the CIECH Group, a leading producer of evaporated salt, soda ash and soda bicarbonate in the European Union, things are moving at a rapid pace at its new salt plant (total investment of 140 million euros) in Stassfurt, Saxony-Anhalt. In a press conference today attended by trade and general media, CIECH announced plans to start production of pharmaceutical salt in the 4th quarter. It was also reported that the initial products produced in Stassfurt have already been delivered to customers. The various salt products will be supplied primarily to Europe, with pharmaceutical salt to be exported worldwide at a later date.

The CIECH Group is on target with its new German salt works. Experts expect the global market for industrial salts to grow significantly. In 2019, the market was estimated at €13.29 billion, and it is expected to significantly grow to €20.4 billion by 2027*. The salt produced by CIECH is used in many end products, such as medicine, cosmetics, and processed foods. The increasing demand for industrial salts in wastewater treatment is an area that CIECH directly caters to with the salt tablets it produces in Stassfurt. The use of sodium chloride in the manufacture of many products in the pharmaceutical industry is also growing. "Thanks to the high-quality of our brine deposits and a two-stage purification process, we will be able to meet the requirements to produce pharmaceutical salt," announced Miroslaw Skowron, a member of the CIECH Group's Management Board, adding, "our plan is to start production of pharmaceutical salt in the fourth quarter."

During today's press conference, CIECH also announced that its initial products produced in Stassfurt have already been delivered to customers. "We are on schedule with our new plant and have already been able to sell the first salt tablets as well as wet salt to customers in Germany," said Andrzej Dawidowski, Head of the Salt Business Unit at the CIECH Group. Currently, the plant is still in the pre-commissioning phase. Full operations are scheduled for the end of the year.

CIECH is creating around 140 new jobs at the new salt plant, which is adjacent to the existing soda plant. This brings CIECH's total workforce in Stassfurt to over 500. The company's own brine deposits, its own energy supply and the particularly efficient and environmentally friendly MVR technology make the plant one of the most modern and environmentally friendly salt works (for the production of evaporated salt) in Europe. The initial batch of wet salt and the first salt tablets were produced only a few weeks ago. The production of table salt follows next, and this will later be followed by pharmaceutical salt. Salt tablets are one of the primary products being produced in Stassfurt and will account for a high proportion of the total annual production capacity of 450,000 tons of evaporated salt. After reaching this target, the CIECH Group will be one of the leading European producers of evaporated salt and the largest supplier of salt tablets in Europe.
