First salt tablets roll off the production line at CIECH

Staßfurt, June 22, 2021 - For the CIECH Group, a leader in the production of salt, soda ash and baking soda in the European Union, 2021 is a special year. In addition to the existing soda plant in Staßfurt (Saxony-Anhalt), it is commissioning one of the most modern and environmentally friendly plants for the production of evaporated salt - and at the same time creating around 140 new jobs. Now the chemical group has produced the first salt tablets. This is part of the pre-commissioning phase the plant is in. Salt tablets form the basic element of the plant's product range in Germany and account for a high proportion of the annual production capacity of 450,000 metric tons of evaporated salt per year. After reaching this target, the CIECH Group will become one of the leading European producers of evaporated salt.

"In the coming weeks, we will continue the pre-commissioning phase and then gradually increase production capacity," explains Andrzej Dawidowski, Head of the Salt Business Unit of the CIECH Group, adding, "With the new plant in Staßfurt, we want to further strengthen our position on international markets." In the new salt plant (investment sum 140 million euros) in Staßfurt, the chemical group uses its own brine deposits for salt production. Using the particularly efficient and environmentally friendly MVR technology, the brine is brought to boiling point with the addition of steam. The resulting wet salt has a residual moisture content of 2.5 percent and is processed into dry salt and salt tablets in a further production step.

At present, the plant is still in the pre-commissioning phase. The first batch of wet salt was produced only recently, and the first salt tablets will now follow. These are particularly interesting for the Western European market, such as Germany, France, Italy and other countries where water hardness is very high. Salt tablets are used, for example, in water treatment plants and help to soften water. In the coming weeks and months, CIECH will expand its product portfolio to include table salt, iodized table salt, industrial salt and pharmaceutical salt.
